  • How does PhD/Proficiency in Art education differ from master’s education?

The PhD/Proficiency in Art programs provide students with the necessary skills to conduct independent research, examine scientific problems and data from a broad and profound perspective, to comment, analyze and achieve new syntheses. Proficiency in Art is a PhD equivalent higher education program aiming to reveal an original work of art and a superior application and creativity in music and performing arts. (YU Graduate Programs Procedures and Principles Article 14 (1) and Article 23 (1)).

  • What is the duration of PhD/Proficiency in Art programs?

Excluding the period spent in scientific preparation program and regardless of whether the student registers for each semester or not, the PhD program is eight semesters, starting from the semester in which the student is enrolled to the program. The maximum period for PhD is twelve semesters. (YU Graduate Programs Procedures and Principles Article 16 (1) and Article 25 (1)).

  • How can I apply Graduate School programs?

There is an Online Application tab under the Applications tab on the Graduate School website. This tab directs candidates to the application page, and candidates who sign up the system (free of charge) complete their application when they upload the required documents (transcript, ALES score, graduation certificate, foreign language document, etc.) and finalize their registration.

  • What are the admission requirements for Graduate School programs?

  • Can I apply more than one PhD/Proficiency in Art program at the same time?

It is possible to apply more than one PhD/Proficiency in Art program at the same time.

  • Can I register more than one PhD/Proficiency in Art program at the same time?

One cannot register more than one PhD/Proficiency in Art program. (YU Graduate Programs Procedures and Principles Article 17 (7))

  • Can I apply for a PhD/Proficiency in Art Program in a different field other than my bachelor’s/master’s degree?

The bachelor’s/master’s degrees accepted by each program are different. Programs accepted can be accessed via the link below:

https://lee.yasar.edu.tr/en/requirements/Scientific / artistic preparation programs determined by the department are applicable for students who have been admitted to master’s and PhD/Proficiency in Art programs, who have received their undergraduate or graduate degrees from different undergraduate or graduate programs, and those who have received their undergraduate or graduate degrees from other higher education institutions. Courses required to be taken in scientific / artistic preparation program cannot replace the courses required to complete the relevant graduate program. The time that the student takes scientific / artistic preparatory courses is not counted as the period of education. A student in a scientific / artistic preparatory program can take courses for a graduate program with the recommendation of the relevant department, as well as the approval of the administrative board of the graduate school. In this case, the student is considered to have started the first semester of the education period.

  • I am a graduate of non-thesis master program. Can I apply for a PhD/Proficiency in Art program?

Candidates must have a master’s degree (thesis) in order to apply for a PhD/Proficiency in Art program. (YU Graduate Programs Procedures and Principles Article 15 (1))

  • What is the application period for the programs of the Graduate School?

  • I do not have a foreign language score; does your university open a language exam?

For PhD/Proficiency in Art applications, YDS or the equivalent score defined by ÖSYM is required; the foreign language exam of the university is not valid. For the required language scores, please see:

  •  Can I apply for special student status?

Students enrolled in a Master’s, PhD or Proficiency in Art program can be accepted as special students with the approval of the department of the graduate school in which they are enrolled in graduate courses in other higher education institutions. The exemption procedures of the graduate courses are carried out by the head of the department in which they are registered as special students. (Regulation on Postgraduate Education, Article 31 (1) revision, 22 November 2019)

Students who do not enroll in a graduate program cannot take courses with special student status.

  • Whom should get the reference letter from? Is there a template? When should I submit it?

It is recommended that the reference letter is taken from academics who know the candidate within his/her graduate or undergraduate studies.  For the template, please see: https://lee.yasar.edu.tr/en/application/documents-required-for-application-and-registration/

  • What should the letter of intent include?

The letter of intent includes the reason for the candidate’s application to the program s/he wants to study, the subject s/he wants to work on and his/her motivation in this regard. The candidate is expected to explain his/her competence and potential with regard to his/her success in the subject s/he proposed to specialize, through his/her past studies and future goals.

  • What are your scholarship and fee discount opportunities?

Yaşar University Graduate School PhD/Proficiency in Art Programs have a 100% education fee discount (scholarship) for all national and international students.

If the student receives any disciplinary action other than the warning penalty, his/her scholarship is discontinued. (Yaşar University Graduate Education Scholarship and Discount Directive Article 8 (1b))

  • Is it possible to transfer from one PhD program to another? I am currently a student of a PhD/Proficiency in Art degree at a different university; can I transfer to your university? What are the requirements? Can I request an exemption for the courses I have taken?

Students who have completed at least one semester in another department at Yaşar University or in a graduate program of another higher education institution can be admitted to graduate programs by transfer within the quotas determined by the University. (Yaşar University Regulation on Postgraduate Education 13 (1)). External transfer applications are also possible. For programs with lateral transfer, the student must meet the minimum application requirements of the program that s/has been transferred to and apply within the announced period with the necessary documents. The student who is entitled to enroll in the PhD/Proficiency in Art program can be exempted from up to 4 courses related to the program with the courses s/he has taken and succeeded before at another higher education institution. (Yaşar University Regulation on Postgraduate Education 29 (1)).

  • Is it possible to take courses from outside the university?

In PhD/Proficiency in Art programs, maximum two courses can be selected from the courses offered at other higher education institutions with the recommendation of the head of the department and the approval of the administrative board of the graduate school. (YU Graduate Programs Procedures and Principles Article 14(4) and 23(3))

  • Is it possible to appoint a co-advisor?

In cases the thesis work requires more than one thesis advisor, a co-advisor, who may be an instructor having at least a PhD degree from inside or outside the university staff, may be appointed. (YU Graduate Programs Procedures and Principles Article 17(2) and 26 (1))
